High-Volume 5.1 Trailer Adaptation & Delivery Workflow
Our video and agency vendors usually have many promo spots and trailers they need mixed to 5.1 surround sound on a weekly basis. Ensuring your audio is compliant with what your distributor or platform requires can be overwhelming. Not following the technical delivery specs can get your film rejected and can delay your launch.
At TravSonic, we solve this through a customized 5.1 adaptation process built upon two decades of audio post-production experience. After completing hundreds of surround sound projects, we have refined a tried-and-true workflow process that adapts to different video projects and scenarios.
Through our Audio Post-Production pipelines, we eliminate common problems that occur when converting stereo sound into 5.1 surround sound. This includes preventing phase issues, muddy bass, comb filtering, and buried dialogue.
Here is how we manage high-volume trailer adaptations to keep your schedule moving smoothly without losing the original vision of your mix.
The Problem: Tight Deadlines and Distribution Hurdles
Many creative companies are tasked with producing marketing promos for independent films, studios, or smaller distributors on very tight schedules. When you are racing the clock to get a spot finished, audio compliance should be the last thing you have to worry about.
The delivery bottleneck usually comes down to two factors:
- The Distributor's Specs: Even if a promo or trailer was originally mixed in stereo for web viewing, today's streaming platforms, digital campaigns, and multi-channel networks frequently require a 5.1 surround mix for final distribution approval.
- The Time Crunch: Editors and producers have to turn projects around quickly. No one wants to have their schedule derailed or have to recalculate budgets due to audio issues.
The Solution: Fast and Reliable 5.1 Adaptation Workflow
To make this simple for our partners, we use a tested workflow focused on speed and simple flat-rate pricing.
When a video production house needs a trailer adapted for multi-channel delivery, the process follows these steps:
- Submitting Audio Assets: Your team sends over the approved stereo mix and stems, video reference, and the required audio specification sheet.
- Quality Control & Initial Checks: All stereo stems are scanned through our in-house quality control audit tool. This step checks for DC offsets, phasing issues, pops and clicks, as well as file issues. These issues are corrected before they ever reach our mixing studio. We will also make sure all intended sounds are on the stems.
- Specialized Processing: Custom process chains are used to mix audio stems into the surround channels, manage dedicated low-frequency effects processing to eliminate phase problems, and process dialogue so it remains prominent.
- The Fold-Down & Mono Compatibility Check: Before any mix leaves our studio, it undergoes fold-down verification. We check the 5.1 downmix to ensure it matches the balance of your original stereo asset without comb filtering or phase issues. It is then summed down to mono to guarantee phase coherency on single-speaker playback devices like phones, smart speakers, and laptops.
- Final Master Package Delivery: We prepare the final 5.1 and stereo full mixes, stems (DME) and reference video in a master package for the distributor.
Why This Streamlined Pipeline Works
Having the ability to process multiple trailers per week allows us to build our routine. Making sure you have your assets in hand from the beginning, flagging what may be missing, utilizing our software to keep files clean, and having a flat rate and trusted methods of processing allow our partners to schedule and budget with confidence.
Taking away the headache when it comes to final delivery. No more staying up late to make sure you meet your sound specs.
